Joe was born in Bend, OR, while his father was serving in World War II. He grew up in St. Paul, MN, and graduated from St. Agnes High School in 1961. He went to the University of Notre Dame where he earned a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering in 1966 and his M.S. in Engineering Science in 1968. He moved to California, where as an engineer, he made many technical contributions including creating the non-linear mathematical model for the space shuttle engine control system. He moved back to Minnesota in 1975 and enjoyed a successful 20-year career at MTS Systems.
Joe had a strong personal involvement in children’s education. After leaving MTS, he followed this passion by being one of the four founders of Holy Family Catholic High School in Victoria, MN in 2000. There he taught AP Physics, Physics and Chemistry for 12½ years, served on their Board of Directors, and did extensive volunteer work on educational projects. He retired in 2016 due to his battle with cancer.
Joe was deeply connected with his family. He married the love of his life, Gayle, in 1975, and they raised their son and daughter, Paul and Dinaz in Chanhassen, MN. He inspired not only his family, but also his students, co-workers, and everyone he met with his intelligence, sense of humor, endless curiosity, love of life and adventures, and compassion in helping others. He will remain always in the hearts of all who were blessed to have been a part of his life.
